Amazing 1927 Lou Gehrig Type I Original Underwood & Underwood Photo – Used for the Cover of the 1928 Sporting News Record Book – Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

One of the most incredible Lou Gehrig photos you will ever come across, this 1927 Underwood & Underwood offering portrays an "Iron Horse" stoic portrait image that was used for the highly popular 1928 Sporting News Record Book front cover! Measuring approximately 6" x 7-3/4", the image was taken directly after the Yankees clinched the 1927 American League pennant, with the verso's caption providing details of how "Murderer's Row" claimed first place from opening day straight thru the season. Dated September 14, 1927, led by Ruth and Gehrig, the Yankees would eventually sweep the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1927 Fall Classic, placing an indelible claim as the arguable greatest team in baseball history.

Hobbyists are well aware of the staggering price tags now associated with original Type 1 photos of classic cards or periodicals, and this world-class "Iron Horse" illustration certainly falls directly into that category. Deemed a Type 1 photo by the illustrious PSA company, Gehrig's "timeless" pose is breathtaking, as the iconic first baseman gazes into a future that would see him become one of our National pastime's foremost legends. Superb clarity and contrast, no obtrusive creasing, a fine perimeter edge and only a few negligible surface blemishes in the upper right quadrant complete a sensational obverse side. The verso reveals the critical Underwood & Underwood News stamp as well as a detailed caption providing an account of the Yankees A.L. pennant status. Any original collectible of Gehrig is widely sort after within the collecting community due to his unequivocal legacy, let alone one from his immortal 1927 season when he captured the A.L. MVP.

Tragically, his incredible career was cut short by the deadly "ALS" disease (now more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease) that took his life at the young age of 37. Yet, with all of his "on the field" batting accomplishments, he will always be best remembered for his 2,130-consecutive game streak, with his incomparable "Luckiest Man On The Face Of The Earth" farewell speech at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939 forever residing as our National Pastime's Gettysburg Address. Simply stated, his legacy will outlast eternity, and we cannot imagine a finer testament for this National icon that an original 1927 photo that captures the essence of his unparalleled stature!
