(LOT 616)
c.1930's Hank Greenberg Image used for his c.1934-'36 Diamond Stars Card – Measures Approx. 6" x 8" - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

Arguably the most significant Hank Greenberg photo, this ultra-rare "half-body" portrait image resides as the exact illustration utilized for his classic c.1934-'36 Diamond Stars #54 subject! It is no secret that the one of the hobby's most revered collecting angles is capturing PSA Type 1 photos representing HOF players' ultra-desirable baseball cards. Any high-end artifact representing "Hammerin" Hank Greenberg is highly coveted by the collecting community. Along with Harry Heilmann who also enjoyed his finest seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Greenberg clearly stands as one of our National Pastime's most underrated hitters.

Playing only 9 full seasons in the Major Leagues (he lost almost a full 4 years due to WWII), while Greenberg's lifetime statistics aren't record setting, they were surely productive. Winner of 2 MVP awards, he averaged over 35 homers and a 'staggering' 140+ RBI's (including seasons of 183 and 170), with 1938 being his greatest season when he chased Babe Ruth's legendary 60 home run mark, finishing at 58 dingers. Along with Jimmie Foxx and Lou Gehrig, he will forever be considered one of baseball's greatest 1st baseman to ever to step into the batter's box, justifying why this stupendous Greenberg offering resides as a noteworthy illustration for any serious collection. Measuring approximately 6" x 8", Greenberg's classic pose reveals fine resolution and contrast, with the few stray diminutive wrinkles and scratches not impeding the stellar aesthetics.

The perimeter reveals evidence of trimming, most notably along the upper and right edges, and there is a rather large left corner chip. The flipside includes various pencil notations and date stampings, and unfortunately there is no photographer/news credit stamp (PSA has not been able to determine the photographer). As any baseball card or photo enthusiast would attest to, an original Type 1 Greenberg image representing one of our hobby's most desirable pre-WWII "Hammerin Hank" cardboard issues merits a final resting place in any world-class gathering!
