(LOT 333)
"Unique for the Grade" 1954 Bowman #174 Pete Castiglione – INCORRECT ".970/.959 Fielding Avg." Variation (PSA Gem Mint 10) – "1 of 1": The SOLE Highest Graded Example!

Standing tall as the "best of the rest" this breathtaking "PSA Gem Mint 10" 1954 Bowman Pete Castiglione offering resides as the SOLE PSA 10 in existence! It should be noted that this #174 subject is the INCORRECT ".970/.959 Fielding Average variation (as opposed to the CORRECT ".966/.959" version). In 1953, sure-handed infielder Pete Castiglione handled 206 chances at 3rd base, shortstop and 2nd base for the Pirates and Cardinals, with the slick-fielding Castiglione making only 7 errors. The 199 errorless plays (out of 206 chances) equates to the correct .966 fielding average for 1953, with the Bowman Gum Company's inaugural release inadvertently printing the erroneous .970 figure reflected on this supreme offering.

As was the case with 40 different 1954 variation cards, Bowman fixed their statistical errors, re-issuing the 40 erroneous subjects reflecting correct stats with the Pete Castiglione subject being one of those highly coveted variations. A true "1 of 1", this amazing card portrays a wonderful half/body portrait pose of the forgotten infielder as he dons his St. Louis Cardinals uniform. Absolutely sensational rich hues, exquisite clarity and a near-perfectly centered image "steal the show", with the blistering sharp edging and pristine-like surfaces all combining to substantiate the pinnacle assessment. A bona-fide "unique for the grade" cardboard memento, its undisputed "1 of 1" standing as the "finest of its kind" merits it a final resting place in one of the elite PSA registered 1954 Bowman compilations!
