(LOT 94)
1962 Topps #234 WS Game #3 – "Roger Maris Wins It In The Ninth" – '61 in '61 Collection (PSA Gem Mint 10) - The SOLE PSA Gem Mint 10 Example!

Most baseball historians were convinced that one of baseball's unbreakable records was the "Bambino's" historic 60 round-trippers, achieved in the Yankee's historic 1927 season. While several players have since surpassed the 61 mark, it is no secret that Bonds, McGuire and Sosa's figures were triggered by performance enhancing drugs, thus discounted by a seemingly infinite number of baseball purists. Thus, we are left with Roger Maris' 61 home run total in the 1961 season, clearly inspiring the owner of the previous finest PSA Registered set to brand it "61 in 61"! Back in 2017, that awe-inspiring compilation was given to Memory Lane and sold as a myriad of separate lots, with card#234 (World Series Game 3) standing as one of the highly coveted "Gem Mint 10" 1962 cards.

It is no secret that the 1962 Topps issue is one of the most excruciating sets to find "Gem Mint 10" specimens, due to their ultra-condition sensitive wood grain borders. Therefore, it should come as little surprise that this absolutely extraordinary #234 Roger Maris World Series Game#3 "Gem Mint 10" offering stands as the SOLE copy at the pinnacle 10 level! Indeed, of the 800+ encapsulated copies, only this "unique for the grade" gem has managed to achieve sheer perfection. As almost an anticlimax to the incredible 1961 season in which Maris eclipsed Ruth's sanctified homer mark, the Yankees would best the Cincinnati Reds in five games. Game#3 in Cincinnati was decided in dramatic fashion, with Roger Maris placing a final exclamation point on his incomparable season by breaking a 2-2 tie with a ninth-inning game winning round-tripper off of Reds hurler Bob Purkey.

Topps celebrated that classic moment by placing Maris' iconic batting pose on their 1962 #234 subject that represented World Series Game#3. Every aspect of this card justifies the "perfect" PSA assessment including ultra-rich hues, remarkable resolution, a razor-sharp perimeter, near-perfect centering, unblemished surfaces and the virtually "impossible to find" flawless brown borders. Simply stated, no baseball card could possibly suffice as a finer testament for Roger Maris's unparalleled 1961 campaign than this "best of the rest" offering that proudly stands as the SOLE PSA Gem Mint 10 example on the planet!
