(LOT 38)
"Unique for the Grade" 1938 Goudey Heads Up #249 Jimmy Foxx (PSA NM/MT+ 8.5) – "1 of 1"; Only One Graded Higher

One of our National Pastime's greatest right-handed all-time hitters, Jimmy Foxx posted an incredible .325 lifetime batting average, 1,921 RBIs, 534 homeruns, a 1933 Triple Crown an amazing run of 13 consecutive seasons of 100+ RBIs. He was unquestionably the strongest right-handed batter of his time, walloping a host of colossal home runs including one that sailed into Yankee Stadium's left field upper deck! No wonder his early baseball cards are highly coveted by elite enthusiasts, with few as popular as this 1938 Goudey "Head's Up" #249 version that just happens to be the SOLE example at this lofty plateau with only a single specimen graded higher! In 1938, the Goudey Gum Co. effectively pleased the public with a set that included a real photo color image affixed to a caricature body, and this exalted Foxx offering certainly stands as one of the finest surviving subjects.

After reviewing this museum worthy offering, one can only ponder the literally "perfect" qualities required to achieve mint status. Pack-fresh in virtually every conceivable way, the classic Foxx "line-drawing" image including the ultra-popular caricature portrait illustration exhibits outstanding resolution, with the sparkling blue and red/orange hues affixed to a brilliant surface. The illustration within the thin lined blue frame is extremely well centered (near 50/50), and the "JIMMY FOXX, Red Sox" jet black text affixed to the lower blue border reveals superior clarity. Pinpoint corners, a razor-sharp perimeter and a super clean verso are the final attributes substantiating the lofty "1 of 1" assessment that places this "unique for the grade" cardboard gem near the top of the PSA "Pop Chart!"
