(LOT 134)
Don Baylor's 1985 Louisville Slugger "SILVER SLUGGER AWARD" as DH for the New York Yankees – Becky Baylor LOA

In 1985, Don Baylor would once again win the illustrious Louisville Slugger "SILVER SLUGGER AWARD" as the premier Designated Hitter (DH) in the American League (as he did in 1983). This renowned annual award is given to the finest offensive performer at each position. While Baylor's batting average somewhat dipped in 1985, his power numbers remained robust as he walloped 23 home runs, knocked in 91 runs and posted a superb .760 OPS. We at memory Lane are proud to present this 1985 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award claimed by Baylor for his fine batting exploits as the Bronx Bombers' DH, exhibiting similar dimensions to his similar 1983 Award also presented in this auction.

This Louisville Silver Slugger award's wood backing measures approximately 25" from top to bottom and roughly 11" across, with the critical silver-plated bat standing at an imposing 35" tall and attached to a wooden shaped home plate. The weight stands at 8-lbs, 1.6-oz., and the top right exhibits the classic Louisville Slugger Logo (black oval plaque) with the silver lettering reading: "125 – Louisville Slugger". To the right of the bat is the key black plaque with the following inscriptions: "HILLERICH & BRADSBY CO." – SILVER SLUGGER AWARD – PRESENTED TO DON BAYLOR-DH – NEW YORK – MEMEBR OF THE SPORTING NEWS AMERICAN LEAGUE OFFENSIVE TEAM – 1985".

Beneath this imposing inscription are the names of the eight other star position players who captured this illustrious award including: Fisk/C; Mattingly/1B; Whitaker/2B; Brett/3B; Ripken/SS; Henderson/OF; Winfield/OF; & Bell/OF. Incredibly, 6 of the 9 players who won the award in 1985 are already members of Cooperstown's Hall of Fame, with both Baylor and Mattingly right on the cusp of that most prestigious honor. Depicting outstanding eye appeal, the few existing stray "dings/nicks" and general surface wear do not impede the spine-tingling aura of this momentous offering that was certainly one of Baylor's most rewarding honors! - Becky Baylor LOA
