(LOT 878)
1958 Bell Brand Dodgers 10-Card Set

Arguably the most celebrated of all Major League baseball relocation projects was when the Dodgers and Giants moved from New York City to the West Coast after the 1957 season. While the New York fan base was decimated, San Francisco and Los Angeles were ecstatic, with their beloved cities now hosting Major League baseball for the first time in the state of California. To commemorate this landmark event, the Los Angeles based Bell Brand manufacturer issued a 10-card Dodger baseball card set, with individual cards placed in their Potato and Corn Chip products. Measuring approximately 3.5" x 4.5", the cards were placed in cellophane packs to keep them clean from the greasy chips. The oversized cards include sepia toned images of the most popular Dodger players, framed by a green woodgrain border with the versos reflecting both a brief player "bio" and statistical information as well as the elaborate Bell Brand logo near the lower edge.

Half of this eclectic set includes Cooperstown inductees Campanella, Drysdale, Koufax, Reese/SP and Snider/SP. Extremely obscure in high grade, many of these oversized cards were ultimately removed from their protective cellophane and subject to abusive handling from the myriad of kids that purchased the potato/corn chip products. Each card grades "EX" to "EX/MT" with a few residing in "NM" condition. Of interesting note is while Campanella never played a single game with Los Angeles due to his career-ending car accident that left him paralyzed for life, he is still included in the set, thus placing Campanella's Bell Brand subject as one of his final baseball card issues. The remaining subjects (we previously provided the Cooperstown Inductees) include Cimoli/SP; Gilliam; Hodges; Podres/SP; and Zimmer.
