(LOT 146)
1962 Topps #300 Willie Mays PSA 9 MINT

SAY HEY 62!!! In 1962, the "Say Hey Kid" would lead the San Francisco Giants to the National League pennant; walloping 49 home runs and driving in a formidable 141 runs. Although the Giants would eventually lose a tightly contested 7-game series, Mays continued to accumulate the star-player recognition he surely deserved. Synonymous with the unparalleled play of the immortal Willie Mays is this breathtaking PSA Mint 9 offering that has been joined by only eight other examples at this hallowed tier with a SOLE copy graded higher!

The perfect testament for May's legacy, due to the ultra-condition sensitive wood grain borders that plague this issue, finding "Mint 9" specimens is an extremely daunting task, with virtually all of the nine PSA mint examples safely secured in world-class compilations. Hard to imagine, but the classic Mays swinging pose sporting his good-natured grin is atypical near-perfectly centered between four seemingly flawless borders, with many 1962 subjects reflecting skewed and/or titled images.

Flawless surfaces including a glistening obverse side, pinpoint corner tips, and a pristine verso are additional superlatives supporting the miraculous assessment. "Rare for the grade", this museum worthy masterpiece has only been bested by a single 1962 Mays subject, with its low "pop" count certainly the main driver for enticing the most meticulous condition driven collectors!
