(LOT 3)
Breathtaking 1928 Ty Cobb Oversized Original PSA Type 1 Photo Signed by Ty Cobb! Measures Approx. 15-7/8" x 19.5" – Signed "Ty Cobb Aug. 22, 1928" – Full PSA/DNA & JSA LOA's

Presented here is one of the most breathtaking Ty Cobb signed original Type 1 Photos extant, an unfathomable oversized black & white image of the "Georgia Peach" during his final season with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1928. Measuring an incredible 15-7/8" x 19.5", it is accompanied by a PSA Type 1 LOA and even more significantly, it has been signed and dated by the immortal Cobb, with the autograph reading "Ty Cobb, Aug – 22- 28"! Indeed, Cobb utilized a steel-tip black fountain pen to inscribe this momentous offering along his right sleeve, with the autograph slightly fading to brown and revealing approximate "6" strength. Any original Ty Cobb signed image is worthy of the highest hobby accolades for, simply stated, they are few and far between.

Virtually all Ty Cobb signed images were issued after his playing days and are either Type 2/4 photos or magazine pages. Additionally, the few signed Cobb images that surface are typically personalized, with this absolutely "unique" oversized marvel representing a non-personalized Ty Cobb signature on a colossal original Type 1 portrait image. As the old adage goes, coming across this museum worthy keepsake was synonymous to "finding a needle in a haystack", and we cannot imagine another Cobb signed image with these oversized measurements possibly existing. Another critical aspect is that Cobb scripted his signature on this time-defying gem only a month before he would call it "quits" to his unparalleled 24-year career that saw his final two seasons with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics.

For the 1927 season, Connie Mack would purchase both Ty Cobb and Eddie Collins to bolster his already formidable roster that included Cooperstown inductees Foxx, Simmons, Cochrane, Wheat and Grove. After spending 22 years with the Detroit Tigers that saw the Georgia Peach win an unprecedented 12 batting championships in 13 seasons from 1907 – 1919 including a remarkable 9 consecutive titles, the 40-year old Cobb decided to give it a go with the mighty Athletics. Even in his 40's, Cobb would not lose his magnificent batting prowess, batting an incredible .357 and .323 and finally announcing his retirement after his final two at-bats against the Yankees on September 11th. Therefore, Cobb signed this miraculous photo only 3 weeks before his final game, with his August 22, 1928 inscription further evidence of the photo's original stature. The photo reveals a "half-body" stoic portrait image of the fiery Cobb, as he dons his classic Athletics uniform that depicts the period-style "A" on the left side.

Outstanding contrast and clarity "steal the show" as Cobb portrays an almost sheepish grin, sadly knowing that his amazing baseball career is about to come to an end after 24 years of sheer domination. As previously stated, the "Ty Cobb, Aug - 22- 28" inscription is situated on his right sleeve, partially extending into his chest area. The surface only exhibits some stray diminutive blemishes, with a few vertical wrinkles situated on his upper left eye extending into his forehead; along the left side of his Athletics cap and along the upper portion of the "A" insignia. The edging is mostly intact, the corners still reflect a majority of their original square formations, and the blank back reveals a few small areas of negligible toning/soiling. One of the most miraculous Ty Cobb collectibles you will ever see, its oversized PSA Type 1 1928 status and coupled Ty Cobb autograph elevate it to a world-class level, and we highly doubt any such inscribed George Peach image will ever surface again for the taking! – Full PSA/DNA & JSA LOAs; Full PSA Type I LOA
