(LOT 633)
1931 Charity Game w/Al Capone & Gabby Hartnett Original Type 1 Underwood & Underwood Photo - Measures Approx. 8" x 10" - PSA Type I LOA

Anyone who has ever watched either the "Untouchables" TV Series w/Robert Stack or the blockbuster movie starring Kevin Costner as FBI agent Elliot Ness is all too familiar with the legendary story of renowned mobster Al "Scarface" Capone who was the ruthless Chicago based gangster for many years. Eventually imprisoned by Elliot Ness for tax evasion, Capone's notoriety lingers on forever, justifying why this seldom-surfacing photo portraying him and Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett resides as a truly remarkable image! Taken by the prestigious Underwood & Underwood News Service at a Comiskey park charity game on September 10, 1931, Harnett is obviously signing and autograph for Capone's boy Alphonso (Jiggs) Capone, Jr. with "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn sitting directly behind Capone.

All the proceeds of his benefit game were utilized to fund Governor Emmerson's unemployment program, with the 8" x 10" Type I image reflecting spectacular contrast and crystal clear clarity, such that you can clearly see Capone's famous "scar" on his right cheek. No obtrusive surface flaws are evident, with a minor lower corner chip the only glaring flaw. The verso reveals the critical Underwood & Underwood stamp and a vivid caption detailing the nuances of the prominent image and benefit game. A sensational depiction of a rarely surfacing Al Capone original illustration, it turns back the clock to an era when America's law enforcement made a firm stand against an ever-growing crime wave led by one of the most feared mafia criminals extant!
