(LOT 11)
1909 T206 Sweet Caporal 350/30 Christy Mathewson White Cap PSA 7 NM

Presented here is a superb PSA 7 Christy Mathewson "White Cap" Sweet Caporal 350 Subjects gem that stands as one of the cornerstones of tobacco collecting. The revered Christy Mathewson "Hands at Chest" Carl Horner image stands as one of our National Pastime's most defining illustrations. It personifies "turn of the century" baseball with the immortal illustration emanating Matty as the lord of world-class pitchers. No wonder the ATC chose to utilize this image for two of their three Mathewson T206 subjects, with this "White Cap" offering highly coveted by the hobby's elite collectors.

The mere mention of Christy Mathewson's iconic name inspires even the avid baseball enthusiast for it was Matty who ruled "turn of the century" baseball along with Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb. Among his myriad of world-class pitching accomplishments are his unparalleled 3 World Series shutouts in the 1905 Fall Classic that prompted Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack to state: "Christy Mathewson was the greatest pitcher who ever lived. It was wonderful to watch him pitch when he wasn't pitching against you"! The immortal "Hands at Chest" pose has defiantly withstood the test of time, with the powder blue/green background and classic Matty 'white cap" pitching pose emanating aesthetics consistent with a "pack-fresh" example.

The image does slightly favor the upper edge between four blinding white borders, and the corners have managed to retain a majority of their original right-angled formations. A clean Sweet Caporal 350 Subjects verso is the final superlative to a card that may have achieved a higher assessment had it not been for the aforementioned centering issue. Yet, as most hobbyists would attest to, its overall sparkling aesthetics coupled with the superb "NM" grade more than substantiate its Cooperstown worthy cardboard stature!
