(LOT 31)
1933 Goudey #1 Benny Bengough PSA 8 NM-MT

1933 GOUDEY #1!!!... Catcher Benny Bengough may never achieve Hall of Fame immortality, yet his astonishing PSA 8 1933 Goudey #1 subject presented here certainly qualifies for Cooperstown cardboard stature. One of only 6 at this stratospheric plateau, it has only been bested by a measly 2 PSA copies (1-8.5; 1-9), with its "rare for the grade" status placing it among the most coveted "commons" for sophisticated PSA Registry collectors. Bengough played 10 years in the majors including eight with the New York Yankees from 1923 thru 1930, capturing three world championships in '23, '27 and '28.

He ended his career with the St. Louis Browns, with this '33 Goudey gem portraying him in his period style Browns uniform and catchers gear. Immaculate resolution, vibrant hues, a seemingly flawless red background, scintillating corner tips and a brilliant surface all contribute to the accurate assessment, with only a modest favoritism toward the right edge possibly preventing a higher grade. Bottom line is it certainly doesn't take a Hall of Famer to spur stratospheric price tags, with "high-grade/low-pop" commons also achieving amazing pricing points via their highly coveted PSA Set Registry stature!?
