(LOT 2)
1934 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig (SGC Mint 96/9) - "1 of 2; Only ONE Graded Higher!"

In 1933, the prestigious Goudey Company's baseball bubble gum card pioneering effort achieved remarkable success, rationalizing the necessity to command a repeat performance in 1934. With Babe Ruth omitted from the 1934 Goudey issue, its two most popular subjects just happened to be New York Yankees immortal 1st baseman Lou Gehrig, making an appearance on card#'s 37 and 61. Presented here is the more popular and valuable Lou Gehrig "Portrait" pose #37 Goudey; graded a miraculous SGC Mint 9 and joined by only a single other SGC example at this hallowed plateau, with only a SOLE copy graded higher! Furthermore, PSA's illustrious "pop" chart only lists 3 "Mint 9" specimens with NONE graded higher. Indeed, this remarkable offering surely stands as one of the finest 1934 Goudey Gehrig's on the planet! The legacy of Henry Louis Gehrig is un-paralleled in baseball history.

Tragically, his incredible career was cut short by the deadly "ALS" disease (now more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease) which took his life at the young age of 37. Yet, with all of his "on the field" accomplishments including 493 round trippers, a .340 lifetime batting average, almost 2000 RBI's and a staggering 13 consecutive seasons in which he "knocked in" over 100 runs, he will always be best remembered for his 2,130 consecutive game streak, accounting for his sacred "Iron Horse" nickname. Furthermore, his incomparable farewell "Luckiest Man On The Face Of The Earth" speech at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939 will forever be our National Pastime's Gettysburg Address. He was the quiet hero, simply going about his business without a single "blip" such to the point that the mention of his name inspires a still tranquility amongst his vast following.

It is for all of these reasons that the most advanced enthusiasts actively seek his most desirable artifacts, with this awe inspiring pinnacle Goudey qualifying as one of his most sought after cardboard gems. This museum worthy "Mint 9" masterpiece depicts a classic Gehrig portrait pose perfectly registered against a radiant yellow background. Gehrig's fine facial toned colors are extremely sharp and exhibit perfect contrast, almost to the extent of projecting a "3-D" like image that is near-perfectly centered between four absolutely blinding white borders. The popular "Lou Gehrig says" scripted text is extremely bold/vivid, and both sides reflect immaculate surfaces. The finest imaginable pinpoint corners and blistering sharp edges complete a magnificent perimeter, and the verso reveals perfectly registered bold green typography affixed to a clean white surface.

After scrutinizing this card to the most extreme detail, we cannot imagine ANY possible specimen achieving the Dream "Gem Mint 10" technical assessment is this world-class masterpiece has fallen short. Virtually every technical attribute meets perfection standards, and this supreme offering just may suffice as the premier 1934 Goudey #37 Gehrig subject on the planet. In closing, the unique combination of the Gehrig's superior "on the field" achievements, and Gehrig defining the ultimate embodiment of courage have placed him at an unequivocal level with hobby enthusiasts. Lou Gehrig left an indelible mark on the game itself, and his heroism will forever place him amongst Cooperstown's most prominent inductees. Most would agree that no card could possibly transcend Gehrig's timeless legacy more effectively than this quintessential "Iron Horse" heirloom; that proudly emanates pinnacle-like aesthetics reserved for the most sophisticated enthusiast!
